Odoo and ERPNext alternative for manufacturers in India
Odoo and ERPNext for manufacturers: when a full ERP is right, and when the alternative is to fix one process first, such as job cards on the floor.
The ERP demo looked good. Then came the list: item codes, bills of material, routings, opening stock, training for every department, and a go-live date some months away. Meanwhile a customer called about a job, and somebody had to walk the floor to find the job card. That is usually the day a factory owner types "Odoo alternative" or "ERPNext alternative".
What Odoo and ERPNext are
Odoo is a suite of open source business apps from Odoo SA. Its site lists two versions: Odoo Community, which is open source, and Odoo Enterprise, which is licensed. The site describes the Manufacturing app as "MRP + MES + PLM + Quality + Shop Floor + Maintenance": it schedules manufacturing orders, plans capacity and gives the shop floor its own screen. Pricing model, as the site states it: one app is free, and the paid plans are charged per user per month and include all apps. The site adds that mid-size and large companies usually work with a partner.
ERPNext is an open source ERP owned and maintained by Frappe. It covers accounts, sales, buying, stock, manufacturing, projects, HR and payroll. Its manufacturing pages describe bills of material, production planning, work orders with job cards, capacity planning and subcontracting. Pricing model: no per-user fee. Frappe's pricing page says the cost has two parts, hosting and implementation, and that Frappe does not implement directly: a partner does it, or your own team.
Both are built to run the whole business on one set of numbers. That is their strength.
ERP for a factory: what the implementation asks of you
An ERP is a project inside your factory, not only a purchase. Before it shows anything useful, it needs:
- item codes, bills of material and routings for what you make
- opening stock that matches the godown
- every department entering its work in the system, every day
- someone inside who owns the project and gives it hours every week
- a decision on accounts: move from Tally, or run both and agree who types what
None of this is a fault of the software. It is what "the whole business in one system" means.
When Odoo or ERPNext is the right choice
Go for the ERP now if most of these are true:
- You need material planning: what to buy and when, worked out from bills of material and orders.
- You need machine loading, capacity planning or product costing from the system.
- Purchase, stores, production and accounts must share one stock figure.
- You have a person inside to own the project, and some months to give it.
- You have met an implementation partner who has done a factory like yours.
If that is you, a job tracker on the side would be a detour. Put the nine questions before you pay to each partner.
ERP alternative for a factory: fix one process first
Start with one process if the pain has one name: nobody knows where a job is, and a late job is found on its dispatch date. Accounts are fine in Tally, and nobody has the time to run an ERP project this year.
One process, tracked well, also prepares the ground. Supervisors get used to moving a job on a phone, and your stages and hold reasons get written down. An ERP partner will ask for exactly those later.
Odoo, ERPNext or one process: side by side
| Question | Odoo | ERPNext | A system set up for your process |
|---|---|---|---|
| What does it cover? | The whole business, app by app | The whole business in one ERP | One process, for example job cards from material to packing |
| Does it plan material and capacity? | Yes, its Manufacturing app is for that | Yes: production planning and capacity planning | No. It shows where each job is, what is late and why |
| Who sets it up? | Odoo or a partner | A partner or your own team | Set up by us on your own data in about two weeks |
| How is it charged? | One app free, paid plans per user per month | No per-user fee: hosting plus implementation | A fixed one-time price and a flat monthly plan, not per user |
| Who do you call when it stops? | Odoo or your partner | Your partner | One point of contact |
Can you start with one process and move to an ERP later?
Yes. Tally stays for accounts and GST in the meantime. A tracker for one process does not replace an ERP and does not block one. Take an Excel export of your job data every month, so that whatever comes next starts with a clean history.
Which one fits you?
Choose Odoo or ERPNext when you need planning, costing and one stock figure across departments, and you have the people and the months for it. Stay on a well-kept job register while one supervisor can answer every "where is my job?" from it. In between, we set up a Production Job Tracker on your own job cards, or an Order & Payment Tracker if orders and dispatch are the gap. The live demo runs without a signup.
